Veneers in Surrey, BC
What are veneers?
Veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment usually applied to teeth for aesthetic reasons. They are like a thin shell that is bonded to the outer face of the tooth to improve the appearance of the smile and to protect the tooth from damage. While some people get veneers for restorative and surface protection reasons, most patients choose them to improve the appearance of their teeth and smile. With veneers, we have the ability to modify the shape, colour, length and contours of the front teeth.
Why get veneers?
Veneers are a great option for patients looking for ways to change the overall appearance of their smile. These are a few specific reasons why patients may opt for veneers:
- Chips or cracks on the teeth typically caused by injury
- Worn down teeth caused by teeth grinding
- Teeth stains or darkening caused by drugs, medications, or aging
- Large resin fillings that have discoloured over time
The most common type of veneers are made from porcelain. An advantage of porcelain veneers is that they can offer long-term teeth whitening, while at-home or professional teeth whitening procedures tend to have more temporary results. Porcelain veneers are resistant to stains from smoking, wine, and coffee. This procedure may also be used to close gaps in between teeth or, in certain cases, make tilted teeth appear straighter.
One of the advantages of this procedure is that it can be customized to each person’s smile and last up to 10 to 15 years, with proper care. There are several shades to choose from, making it easy to find the right colour and brightness for your smile.
Having porcelain veneers placed is a relatively quick and easy process, as there is a minimal amount of preparation needed. The dentist will first shape the tooth and take a mold or scan of the preparation. After the veneers have been made, they are carefully and individually bonded to the teeth with special dental adhesives.
Composite resin veneers are an alternative to porcelain–they are made from the same material as tooth-colored fillings. These veneers are sculpted directly onto the teeth rather than fabricated by a dental laboratory and typically last between 5-7 years. Unlike porcelain veneers, composite veneers do tend to discolour over time.
Dental veneers don’t generally require any special care aside from regular oral hygiene, which includes both brushing and flossing.
Once a veneer is placed on your tooth it is very difficult to remove, so it is important to consult with your dentist to see if the procedure is a good fit for you.
