Dental implants are a viable option for adults who have missing teeth or require stabilization for their dentures. Dental implants are a permanent solution that can last a lifetime once cared for correctly.

There are several practices that you can integrate into your oral hygiene routine to ensure the longevity of your implants.

How to Properly Clean Your Implant

Unlike teeth, dental implants don’t get cavities or decay, but the gum tissue around them is prone to inflammation and infection. Infection around an implant is known as peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis can lead to the deterioration of the jawbone, leading to implant loss. By cleaning your implants properly, you can avoid the risk of peri-implantitis and other gum issues.

The most common types of dental implants are single-tooth implants, overdentures and implant-supported dentures or bridges, and each type requires different care. Whichever implant you’re planning on getting, you can learn how to care for them by using this guide.

Single-tooth Implants

It’s recommended that you clean your implants at least twice a day using a soft-bristle toothbrush. To prevent your implant crown from being damaged, it’s also important to use low abrasion toothpaste. When brushing, work the bristles around and under the crown.

Another important practice is to ensure that you floss daily. The best type of floss for implants would either be unwaxed tape or Teflon band floss. You can also use an oral irrigator or WaterPik® recommended by your dentist, as this will help reduce food build-up and bleeding in your gums.

Finally, make sure to use an alcohol-free rinse up to twice daily to help flush out bacteria and keep your breath smelling fresh.

Overdentures

Overdentures are removable dentures that are secured to implants by clips. When cleaning an overdenture, you will need to remove it and soak it in a cleaner solution. This should be done every day. Afterwards, inspect the caps and clips attached and look for any that may have come off. If you’re missing any attachments, you’ll need to alert your dentist.

Gently scrub the underside of your overdenture with a denture brush. Afterward, rinse the overdenture with water. Before placing your overdenture back in your mouth, it is critical that you clean the areas where the denture attaches to the implants (abutments). With a small brush, use short, horizontal movements to clean around the abutments.

It is recommended that you get your overdentures checked regularly. Visit your prosthodontist at least every three to six months to have them thoroughly inspected.

Implant-Supported Dentures or Bridges

Implant-supported dentures and bridges are not removable. When cleaning fixed dentures or bridges, it’s important that you brush daily. Using a brush with soft bristles and a low abrasive toothpaste is recommended for the best results.

To clean underneath the bridge or denture, use a small brush, WaterPik® or dental flosser to remove any food or bacteria. Afterward, use a non-alcohol mouthwash to ensure your breath is kept fresh.

It’s also recommended that you visit your prosthodontist every three to six months for a thorough check-up.
